This is according to new research from the Oral Health Foundation and Colgate-Palmolive.

It also found that one in six (15%) do not brush their teeth as much as they did prior to the pandemic. Additionally, almost one in five (19%) say they have not been brushing their teeth twice a day.

Neglected oral health

Other findings include:

  • One in five (20%) are eating unhealthier foods
  • One in 10 (11%) have been drinking more alcohol
  • 84% of the population could be at increased risk of caries.

The research also reveals almost one-in-five (18%) have not visited a dentist for more than two years. And one in three (36%) have reported toothache during the pandemic, with 9% suffering for longer than two weeks.

Nigel Carter is chief executive of the Oral Health Foundation. He said: ‘A worrying number of patients have neglected their oral health during the pandemic. This could have potentially lasting consequences, not only for the health of their mouth but for their general wellbeing also.

‘The public’s awareness of what causes dental caries and how to prevent it, remains poor. Yet, preventing oral diseases like caries is completely in their own hands. All it takes is the correct care.’

Education and prevention

He adds: ‘Dental professionals have a key part to play in the education, prevention and management of dental caries inside and outside of the practice setting.

‘As part of the campaign, there are lots of patient-facing resources to download and share to help raise awareness of dental caries.

‘We believe this can have a significant impact on dental caries outcomes.’

Great service and always on time. Me and my family go for regular check ups here and last year I invested in the boutique teeth whitening which has been great! Made such a difference, and I still continue to buy the syringes to keep them white.

The latest improvements they've made in the surgery are impressive. My concern of venturing out during the pandemic was soon put to rest with the sterile yet welcoming environment that the staff have created. I was pleased to see that they are taking safety and social distancing seriously and managing patients in the waiting area with care. I was very pleased with the results of the hygienist and dental check up. Keep up the good work.

I've been coming to the Queensbury Dental Surgery since 2015. Ive always found the staff courteous and polite. They are especially good with children which is reassuring as a parent. When my son broke one of his front adult teeth Dental Queensbury Surgery were able to fix the tooth and offer comprehensive advice on my son's treatment going further.

As time has passed I've found appointments easier to obtain as their staff has increased.

I recently visited the hygienist and had a deep clean - all the steps in my procedure were explained to be me clearly.

From my personal experience I would highly recommend them.

In my opinion it is one of the best dental surgeries. I have always been after well, even and specially during the pandemic. Reception is excellent, treatment thorough and well managed. Recently I had a filling and also a crown fitted meticulously. The hygienist and therapist does and an excellent job. Would highly recommend this surgery. Thank you all friendly staff.
